Loss is woven into the fabric of being alive.
We lose people we love. We lose relationships, health, physical capacities, roles, communities, homes, possibilities, assumptions about the future, and earlier versions of ourselves.
Some losses arrive suddenly. Others unfold almost imperceptibly over years.
Buddhist teachings begin with a recognition that everything we cherish is subject to change. Yet knowing this intellectually does not necessarily prepare us for the experience of loss.
This program offers a place to explore what it means to live—and love—in a world in which nothing can be held onto forever.
Drawing upon Buddhist teachings, contemporary understandings of grief, meditation, poetry, nature, creative reflection, and the wisdom of the group, participants will explore ways of being present to loss without requiring themselves or one another to fix, transcend, or explain it.
The central question accompanying us throughout the program is:
How do we continue to love when everything we love is impermanent?
❋ Time- Limited, small group formatThis 24 week course is really a contemplative journey—one that supports a continuity necessary for the development of trust while allowing people to enter with very different kinds of loss. Participants are committing to the full arc of the course.
❋ Monthly themes The course is organized into six four-week movements. Buddhist teachings are present throughout, but lightly held: not as doctrine, and not as an explanation for suffering, but as practices and perspectives participants can investigate for themselves. Below are the monthly themes.
1: Entering the Landscape of Loss
What happens to us when something or someone we love is gone?
2: Impermanence
How do we live when everything we love changes?
3: The Many Faces of Grief
Can we make room for grief rather than trying to resolve it?
4: Love, Attachment & Continuing Bonds
What happens to love when its object changes or disappears?
5: Compassion, Meaning & Transformation
How might suffering deepen rather than diminish our humanity?
6: Living With Mortality
Knowing that life ends, how do we want to live?
