Off the Beaten Path Summer Meanderings: Houghton Garden

This summer we will explore several Off the Beaten Path landscapes. Some wild, some cultivated and some a little bit of both. Each inspiring awe and delight! Our first mindful meandering will take place at Houghton Garden, a ten acre parcel of land within the Newton Conservation Area listed on the National Register of Historic Places that graciously winds through groves of onifir, oaks and flowering bushes and along both a stream and a pond. This "wild garden" was designed by Warren Manning, a student of Frederick Law Olmstead and has his hallmark undulating paths, mix of cultivated gardens and wild natural growth. Stone benches and bridges delight the eye and rare bird sightings lift the spirit. It is a magical place!

We reach this garden though the Webster Conservation Area. This is approximately a half-mile trail, well-worn but has several areas that are criss-crossed by tree roots and small rock outcroppings. Once at the garden we will settle into mindfulness practices surrounded by the beauty and wonder of the life around us.

Location Access: The trailhead is located off the rear of the parking area behind the shipping center, "The Street" on Rte 9. Parking is free. It is approximately a half-mile walk from the Chestnut Hill T stop ( Green D-Line).

Once registered, you will receive more details about the meeting location and directions. This section of the Webster Conservation Area is a favorite dog- walking location. Dogs are often off-leash. There is also a good-sized boulder frequented by rock climbing enthusiasts.
